Math We have been continuing our exploration of statistics and probability by learning about various ways to represent and present data visually. We have been learning about discrete vs. continuous data and how we can show information in point and line graphs. We used our measurement skills to record our hand and foot lengths and our heights. We then compared this data using point graphs to find interesting patterns. We have also practiced representing information we gathered during science activities using double-bar graphs. Today, we applied what we have been learning by completing worksheets where students had to use a variety of graphs to answer questions, create their own graphs, and figure out what types of graphs are best for different situations. These should have been brought home to complete and share with parents. Social and Language Arts These two subjects have been largely combined this week, as we are using skills developed in Language Arts to explore a variet...

Thank you to everyone who came out for our celebration of learning. It was great to see so many families and show off what we have been working on. This week... **Math** We have begun our unit on data and statistics. We have learned about probability and different ways to express probability. We have also been learning about theoretical vs. experimental probability and have carried out some of our own experiments with dice, recording information using tallies in a table. We have also been learning about gathering data using surveys. We carried out our own surveys and represented our findings using tallies and a bar graph. **Science** We wrapped up our unit on evidence and investigation. We created review posters and matching activities that we shared at the celebration of learning. We also completed a unit quiz, which we went over and sent home to be shared with parents. Next week we will be starting a unit on classroom chemistry. **LA** We have continued our novel study of *Mani...

We are excited to announce that we will be taking our grade 5 and 6 students to the Calgary Zoo on Wednesday, June 12th. We are also going to Drumheller Royal Tyrrell Museum on Monday 17th. We will be leaving at 8:45 and coming back at 5:15. Parents will need to pick up their students on this day. For each of these field trips, we will need three or four volunteers for each class. If you are available to volunteer for our class, please send me an email back so I can put you down on the list. We will also be having our school's celebration of learning on Thursday, May 16th. You can drop in any time from 6:00-7:30. Every class will have learning displays showing some of the learning happening in our classroom. In Science We have been reviewing evidence and investigation. There are a number of study guides and review activities linked on Google Classroom. We will be having a quiz on Tuesday. In Math We have wrapped up our unit on area, volume, perimeter, multiples and factors. We wil...

Please check Google Classroom for assignments and additional resources. Social Studies We have been learning about the democratic government of ancient Athens. We learned about the class structure of Athenian society and the Rights, Responsibilities and Requirements of each group. If you have not completed the "RRR" assignment please complete that as soon as possible. We then applied what we knew about these classes by completing a role-playing activity and creating a group mosaic. We also used the textbook to learn about the Assembly, Council of 500 and Courts. We highlighted important information and used reading strategies to answer multiple-choice questions. Science We are getting close to wrapping up our unit on evidence and investigation. We have learned about using eyewitness statements, shoe prints, fingerprints, tire tracks, handwriting samples, and ink (chromatography) to make observations and inferences. Next week we will use microscopes to look at hair sam...

Math We are learning about multiples, factors, prime numbers, and composite numbers. Science We are finishing up our sky science unit and are moving on to evidence and investigation. We are starting by learning about observations and inferences and using them in a variety of circumstances. Social We have been learning about the role of local government in our community. After creating our own model community, we used Google maps to research hamlets, villages, towns, and cities in Alberta. We then wrote three paragraphs about the services and events we feel are important in communities. We also wrote about what makes a good elected representative. We will now be researching examples of public services in Calgary and how they impact different stakeholder groups in our city. LA After having a guest indigenous storyteller visit, we have been learning about legends and ways to summarize and tell stories using images. Students have used images to summarize Maniac Magee an...

Thank you to all the students and parents who met with me at parent-teacher conferences. If Parents were not able to join us or would like to arrange another time to meet, they can always reach out and we will work together to find a convenient time. It's been an exhilarating week filled with exploration and discovery in our classroom. Let's dive into the highlights of our journey through various subjects: Science: Our young scientists have been hard at work delving into space research. They've dedicated their time to crafting informative and engaging slide shows about objects in our solar system, which they'll be presenting next week. We also started reviewing and will be preparing for upcoming unit quizzes. I have included a link to a study guide that can be used along with Mr. Polsky's website and other links I have shared previously. Mathematics In the realm of numbers and patterns, our students have been sharpening their problem-solving skills. We've be...

In science, we have been learning about the four forces of flight. We completed a Flight research project where we chose a flying machine or animal and researched how it used lift, drag, thrust to overcome gravity and stay in the air. We also have been learning about the Parts of an airplane and how they control yaw, pitch and roll. In Math we have been learning how to plot points on a plane using ordered pairs. We then started to learn how to move these points and shapes around using transformations (translation, reflection and rotation. We applied this knowledge to create a Transformation map. Students should have the map completed and the description of at least 2 translations and 2 reflections. We will review how to describe rotations next week. This map should be brought home and shared with parents over the weekend. In Social, we have been learning about the Charter of Rights by looking at hypothetical stories. All of the stories can...
