Math

We have been continuing our exploration of statistics and probability by learning about various ways to represent and present data visually. We have been learning about discrete vs. continuous data and how we can show information in point and line graphs. We used our measurement skills to record our hand and foot lengths and our heights. We then compared this data using point graphs to find interesting patterns. We have also practiced representing information we gathered during science activities using double-bar graphs. Today, we applied what we have been learning by completing worksheets where students had to use a variety of graphs to answer questions, create their own graphs, and figure out what types of graphs are best for different situations. These should have been brought home to complete and share with parents.

Social and Language Arts

These two subjects have been largely combined this week, as we are using skills developed in Language Arts to explore a variety of topics we are learning about in Social Studies. We have been practicing our reading comprehension strategies by using excerpts from textbooks to answer a variety of questions about Haudenosaunee society and decision-making processes. We also explored the book "Hiawatha and the Peacemaker." We started by only looking at the illustrations from the book and used them to make predictions about the characters, setting, and events in the story. We then read the story as a class and summarized it in a single paragraph.

We have also continued reading the novel "Maniac Magee" and will likely finish it next week.

Science

We have been applying the scientific method in a variety of experiments and design challenges. We have been learning about states of matter and solutions by dissolving salt in different temperatures of water and making observations. We have also engaged in several paper design challenges where we had to make paper structures to support weight and structures that were as tall as possible. After each attempt, we have been using our observations to make changes and improvements to our designs. Every group manages to improve upon their designs and demonstrate those improvements through direct testing and experiments.

Catch up

With the end of the year quickly approaching, we took some time to create a "catch-up document." We checked all of the assignments we have been working on in Google Classroom. If anything was not complete, we added it to a catch-up list and will have until the end of next week to finish this work. If students are worried about completing any work before then or would like additional help, I will check in with them, and we will come up with a plan for them to demonstrate their learning. I strongly encourage students to share their work with their parents.

As always addition resources, assignments and information can be found on our Google Classroom
