Math 

 

In Math, we have beenbuilding on what we know about fractions and parts of numbers to represent in new ways. We are representing parts of numbers using pictures, fractions, ratios decimals and percentages. We practiced these skills by completing Factions and percentages worksheets. We also completed our Friday 5 which should be shared with parents at home. 

 

Science

 

In Science, we reviewed the Scientific Method. We then used it to complete several hands-on experiments that demonstrated different properties of air. We completed the Columns of air experiment and the Ball race experiment. 

 

We also started our weather watch. Each day different students will make and record weather observations relating to the temperature, wind, clouds, precipitation and atmospheric

pressure. They will share their observations with the class in our daily weather report. We also have used a variety of cloud resources to learn about and identify different types of clouds and what they tell us about the atmosphere and weather. 

 

Social 

 

In Social, we have continued to research and share information about the regions of Canada by working on our Regions of Canada Group Task. Students should have a rough copy of a paragraph about their chosen region and group job. They also should have an image complete that they will add to their groups' region map piece. Next week we will be sharing what

we found with the rest of the class. 

 

LA 

 

Students should have their Giver Final Project completed. We worked this week on making a script to share our work with the class. The script should explain how their project shows an

understanding of the characters, setting and events of the book and a connection they made with the novel. We will be finishing these scripts and sharing our projects with the class next week. 

 

Art

 

In art, we have completed art inspired by Ted Harrison by layering coloured paper to make a landscape. We also learned about pop art and used styrofoam to make our own stamps. We used these stamps to make prints inspired by the art of Andy Warhol.

We are excited to announce that we will be taking our grade 5 and 6 students to the Calgary Zoo on Wednesday, June 12th. We are also going to Drumheller Royal Tyrrell Museum on Monday 17th. We will be leaving at 8:45 and coming back at 5:15. Parents will need to pick up their students on this day. For each of these field trips, we will need three or four volunteers for each class. If you are available to volunteer for our class, please send me an email back so I can put you down on the list. We will also be having our school's celebration of learning on Thursday, May 16th.   Thank you to everyone who came out for our celebration of learning. It was great to see so many families and show off what we have been working on. This week... **Math** We have begun our unit on data and statistics. We have learned about probability and different ways to express probability. We have also been learning about theoretical vs. experimental probability and have carried out some of our own experiments with dice, recording information using tallies in a table. We have also been learning about gathering data using surveys. We carried out our own surveys and represented our findings using tallies and a bar graph. **Science** We wrapped up our unit on evidence and investigation. We created review posters and matching activities that we shared at the celebration of learning. We also completed a unit quiz, which we went over and sent home to be shared with parents.  Thank you to all the students and parents who met with me at parent-teacher conferences. If Parents were not able to join us or would like to arrange another time to meet, they can always reach out and we will work together to find a convenient time.  It's been an exhilarating week filled with exploration and discovery in our classroom.
