This week in 5/6

 Math 


We have been reviewing our skills for fractions. We have reviewed 6 "I can statements" by modelling and practicing them in class. Students then create their own page showing these skills.  This page is our "Friday 5" this week and is due on Monday. The 6 "I can" statements for the page can be found here


Language Arts and Social 


We have been using textbooks and resources to work on our Regions of Canada Paragraph. We should have the web complete which we will be using to fill out our "Hamburger Paragraph" graphic organizer and make a good copy of our paragraphs next week. 


Science 


We are starting our unit on Weather and the Properties of air. We did a few short experiments using the Scientific Method. We also introduced weather and the atmosphere by watching Bill Nye- Atmosphere and doing a few hands-on activities where we acted like air molecules.

We are excited to announce that we will be taking our grade 5 and 6 students to the Calgary Zoo on Wednesday, June 12th. We are also going to Drumheller Royal Tyrrell Museum on Monday 17th. We will be leaving at 8:45 and coming back at 5:15. Parents will need to pick up their students on this day. For each of these field trips, we will need three or four volunteers for each class. If you are available to volunteer for our class, please send me an email back so I can put you down on the list. We will also be having our school's celebration of learning on Thursday, May 16th. You can drop in any time from 6:00-7:30. Every class will have learning displays showing some of the learning happening in our classroom. In Science We have been reviewing evidence and investigation. There are a number of study guides and review activities linked on Google Classroom.   Thank you to everyone who came out for our celebration of learning. It was great to see so many families and show off what we have been working on. This week... **Math** We have begun our unit on data and statistics. We have learned about probability and different ways to express probability. We have also been learning about theoretical vs. experimental probability and have carried out some of our own experiments with dice, recording information using tallies in a table. We have also been learning about gathering data using surveys. We carried out our own surveys and represented our findings using tallies and a bar graph. **Science** We wrapped up our unit on evidence and investigation. We created review posters and matching activities that we shared at the celebration of learning. We also completed a unit quiz, which we went over and sent home to be shared with parents.  Thank you to all the students and parents who met with me at parent-teacher conferences. If Parents were not able to join us or would like to arrange another time to meet, they can always reach out and we will work together to find a convenient time.  It's been an exhilarating week filled with exploration and discovery in our classroom. Let's dive into the highlights of our journey through various subjects: Science: Our young scientists have been hard at work delving into space research. They've dedicated their time to crafting informative and engaging slide shows about objects in our solar system, which they'll be presenting next week.  We also started reviewing and will be preparing for upcoming unit quizzes.
