This week in 5/6

 Math 


We have been continuing to work on representing fractions. We are learning how to convert between mixed numbers and improper fractions and order fractions. Next week we will plot fractions on number lines and learn how to find and use equivalent fractions in a variety of math problems.


Social


We are starting a Regions of Canada Project. Students will have a specific job and region that they will study using physical textbooks, online resources and videos. After using graphic organizers to gather information, students will write a paragraph.


Language Arts


We are close to finishing the novel "The Giver". We will be completing a variety of activities relating to the book including the "Transform My Thinking" activity. 


We will also be doing several activities relating to Remembrance Day. Our class will be taking a leadership role in the Remembrance Day ceremony. More resources and information for this will be posted next week. 


We are also finishing up our unit on Figures of Speech. We have created Idiom images, Onomotopia pop art, found puns in "dad jokes" created our own extended metaphor poems and identified figures of speech in song lyrics. We will continue to practice using figurative language to enhance our own writing. 

Science


We learned about "Tree cookies" (crosssections of tree trunks with rings). We then used this knowledge to create our own "Life of a Tree Art. We are close to finishing our unit in trees, forests and wetland ecosystems. The last main concept we will be exploring is human impact on ecosystems and how we can make positive choices to maintain the environment. 


As always, additional resources and information for all subjects can be found on our Google Classroom. Your child is strongly encouraged to share their username and password with you to provide access or to routinely show you some of the resources we are using.

We are excited to announce that we will be taking our grade 5 and 6 students to the Calgary Zoo on Wednesday, June 12th. We are also going to Drumheller Royal Tyrrell Museum on Monday 17th. We will be leaving at 8:45 and coming back at 5:15. Parents will need to pick up their students on this day. For each of these field trips, we will need three or four volunteers for each class. If you are available to volunteer for our class, please send me an email back so I can put you down on the list. We will also be having our school's celebration of learning on Thursday, May 16th. You can drop in any time from 6:00-7:30. Every class will have learning displays showing some of the learning happening in our classroom. In Science We have been reviewing evidence and investigation.   Thank you to everyone who came out for our celebration of learning. It was great to see so many families and show off what we have been working on. This week... **Math** We have begun our unit on data and statistics. We have learned about probability and different ways to express probability. We have also been learning about theoretical vs. experimental probability and have carried out some of our own experiments with dice, recording information using tallies in a table. We have also been learning about gathering data using surveys. We carried out our own surveys and represented our findings using tallies and a bar graph. **Science** We wrapped up our unit on evidence and investigation. We created review posters and matching activities that we shared at the celebration of learning. We also completed a unit quiz, which we went over and sent home to be shared with parents.  Thank you to all the students and parents who met with me at parent-teacher conferences. If Parents were not able to join us or would like to arrange another time to meet, they can always reach out and we will work together to find a convenient time.  It's been an exhilarating week filled with exploration and discovery in our classroom. Let's dive into the highlights of our journey through various subjects: Science: Our young scientists have been hard at work delving into space research. They've dedicated their time to crafting informative and engaging slide shows about objects in our solar system, which they'll be presenting next week.  We also started reviewing and will be preparing for upcoming unit quizzes.
