Looking back on the week
Math
We continued our work on number sense. We started learning about integers (positive and negative numbers) by brainstorming times that we may see negative numbers in the world. We then plotted integers on a number line so we could order and compare integers. We also introduced decimals by looking at parts of numbers as low as thousandths. We then practiced using the strategies we developed to represent numbers to show numbers with decimals in different ways.
We practiced these skills by completing This week's Friday 5. This should have been completed, marked and corrected by your student. They should have brought this home and shared it with you. We then had a quick quiz on Friday that was the exact same style of questions from Friday 5 but with different numbers. This quiz will be marked and students should be bringing it home next week.
Social
Before we dive deeper into the regions and government of Canada, we are learning about identity and values. Students are exploring the concept of values, and personal and collective identity by creating their own Coat of Arms Activity. We will be using these lenses when we explore the different parts of Canada and what makes them unique.
Science
Students are learning about different types of wetlands and the layers of the forest by researching plants and animals and their adaptations. We are using the information we gather to create an informative flipbook. In addition to the information students have collected independently, there are also a number of provided resources in the 'Class Work" section of our Google Classroom.
Language Arts
We have continued our novel study of "The Giver". We have now read up to the end of chapter 13. We have used the novel to help us practice summarizing stories, learn about how stories are organized, and make predictions and connections to our own experiences and prior knowledge. A digital copy of the book can be found on our Google Classroom. There are also audio versions of the book on YouTube.
We have also continued our unit on figures of speech. Students have now learned about and created their own examples of similes, metaphors, onomatopoeia, puns and personification. We have made artworks, poems, jokes and sentences with a variety of figurative language. Next week we will be working on creating our own Extended metaphor poems.
Art
We finished our exploration of abstract art by creating our own "Picasso Self Portraits". We are now starting to look at impressionism, focusing on Canadian artists such as Emily Carr, the Group of Seven, and Ted Harrison.
