Welcome to the blog!

Welcome to Mr. Parker's Grade 5/6 Blog

This is where you can see a brief summary of what we are working on in class. I will also post important dates and reminders. I will post at least once a week but may also post more often if additional information is needed.

Students should also share their username and password with parents to access our Google Classroom. The Google, Classroom will contain more detailed information about what we are doing in class. On Google Classroom,  I will also post videos, digital copies of assignments, online games, worksheets, textbooks and a variety of other resources. These can be found in the "Classwork" tab at the top of the page.

This week in Grade 5/6

Math

We have been working on place value and representing numbers in a variety of ways. We should be building confidence in showing numbers in standard form, expanded form, number word form, in words, in place value charts and through pictures.

We are now practicing rounding numbers and estimating to help us add and subtract large numbers.

Language Arts

We have started a novel read-aloud of "The Giver". Digital and audiobook copies are posted on Google Classroom. We have started to make summaries, ask questions and make predictions and connections about the book.

We have also been learning about parts of speech and using what we learn to help with our own writing. This week we will be learning about how paragraphs are organized. We will also start learning about figures of speech and incorporating what we learn into our own work.

Social

We have been learning about different types of maps. We are completing a map project where students have to create their own political map of Canada. This will help us when we start learning about the regions of Canada.

Science

We have started our unit on wetland and forest ecosystems. We learned about producers, consumers, decomposers, food webs and food chains. We are also learning about the water cycle and will be using the scientific method to carry out experiments demonstrating what we are learning.

Orange Shirt Day (Thursday)

Thursday is Orange Shirt Day in recognition of the work schools are doing for Truth and Reconciliation. Students are encouraged to wear orange shirts on that day and will be participating in a number of activities to learn about what Orange Shirt Day is and how we can move forward together in the spirit of reconciliation. There is no school on Friday.
